Not too long ago, during our weekly women’s Bible study, I was talking with a woman who expressed concern and heartbreak regarding one of her grown children. Her heart was broken because this adult child…who had been raised in a Christian home, confessed Jesus Christ as savior, and went to Church and Sunday school…had recently made some very bad choices. As she was overcome with grief and concern, she expressed her discouragement and hurt, because the choices that her grown child was making were contrary to God’s Word and His principles...
Tears streamed down her cheek with the pain of a mother’s broken heart; because she knew that the results of this child’s behavior could have devastating effects, life altering consequences, with little to no hope of a promising future. It was then that our group embraced her, joined hands in a circle around her, and began to pray. Her weeping softened as her emotions went from desperation to hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Have you ever experienced a situation like this? What would you do if a parent came to you with a similar story? What words of encouragement would you offer to this parent?
As children's ministry leaders it is quite possible that you may encounter a situation similar to this one. Therefore, I encourage you to be equipped to offer God’s Word as the solution to life’s challenges when a parent comes to you for advice. Equipping parents with God’s Word will give them a critical tool for successful parenting and will offer them strength, hope, peace, joy, and love through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is our only source of truth.
Here are just a few favorite Scripture verses to encourage parents who experience heartbreak...
Strength is Found...In His Word
Psalm 29:11 “The Lord gives his people strength; the Lord grants his people security.”
Psalm 18:2 “The Lord is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, my horn that saves me, and my refuge."
Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry.”
Joshua 1:9 “I repeat, be strong and brave! Don’t be afraid and don’t panic, for I, the Lord your God, am with you in all you do.”
Deuteronomy 31:8 “The Lord is indeed going before you – he will be with you; he will not fail you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged!”
Hope is Found...In His Word
1 Peter 1: 3-5 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you, who by God’s power are protected through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
Romans 5:1-5 “Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of God’s glory. Not only this, but we also rejoice in sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance, character, and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
Romans 15:13 “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in him, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Peace is Found...In His Word
Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God and the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 5:1 “Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Joy is Found...In His Word
Psalm 97:11 “The godly bask in the light; the morally upright experience joy.”
1 Peter 1:6-7 “This brings you great joy, although you may have to suffer for a short time in various trials. Such trials show the proven character of your faith, which is much more valuable than gold – gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away – and will bring praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”
Love is Found...In His Word
Psalm 36:5 “O Lord, your loyal love reaches to the sky; your faithfulness to the clouds.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 “Love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love does not brag, it is not puffed up. 13:5 It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful. 13:6 It is not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth. 13:7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
Proverbs 8:17 “I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.”
John 3:16 “For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
John 16:27 "For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God."
John 14:21 “The person who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will reveal myself to him.”
Give parents God's Word, the only source that will encourage them to press on through challenging times when children make wrong choices that are not pleasing to God. “The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he delivers those who are discouraged." Psalm 34:18
