Balancing "Wifehood" and "Motherhood"

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

As a new mom, I sometimes find the "mom" part of me defining my days, while the "wife" part of me has to take a backseat at times. Thankfully, my mother-in-law, Maria, who is from Romania, is living with my husband and me for a while. She has helped us tremendously with caring for our new little boy, Evan Christian, who was born on July 6.

Praying Through The Pain: Hannah's Example

I owe a debt of gratitude to the author (and of course, the Author) of 1 Samuel 1. Thanks for keeping it real, Hannah. This chapter takes us through what must have been an excruciating personal journey in infertility and relational chaos. Hannah is barren and surrounded by fertility (can anyone else identify with this?).

Prose for the Broken-Hearted

I remember a time, more faintly now, when my heart broke so deeply, I thought it would never mend. I asked God to never let me fully forget that once I got married, so I can always have a tender place of empathy for the singularly gut-wrenching melange of disappointment, depression, and loss.

If you are broken-hearted today - I won't belittle you with trite cliches. It hurts. It hurts badly. And in the depth of that hole of pain, I pray that God gives you the strength to look up. He's there; the Light at the end of the tunnel.

Love Rehearsal

Yesterday, my husband not only washed a load of laundry, but he also folded said laundry and put it away.

The day before that, he helped me make cookies (and they fill my tummy with gastronomical joy! They are perfection molded in his hands).

He always leaves the toilet seat down.

Every day, he greets me with a wide grin when he comes home.

He tells me I am beautiful.

Dumbstruck

This particular blog entry day catches me totally unprepared, because, well, I just celebrated my birthday (one of those birthdays that are in between "significant" milestone years). I find myself vacillating between euphoria and discontent.

The questions continuously bubble up:

What have I done with my life? Am I using the gifts and talents that the Lord has given me for His glory? Am I a better wife, student, worshipper, friend, daughter, than I was last year?

Falling Down

Throughout the United States, evangelical Christians attend churches week after week in order to hear preaching, participate in music, and to experience God. Often, people refer to Sunday services as “worship” service. Even more commonly, congregants refer to the musical portion of their service as “worship.”

Now What? Then What?

I've been asking two questions of myself, and of other people, lately.

"Then what?"

"Now what?"

For me, these two questions get at the heart of ministry, evangelism, and growth in Christ. These questions push past the easy answers and reveal the processes that effect change, sanctify, and propel us towards a deeper love for, and faith in, God.

Grown Folks' Safety

When I was a kid, safety looked like the approval in my mom’s eye as she looked over my homework. It tasted like the crust-less peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches lovingly prepared by my grandma’s hands. Calm and comfort sounded like Daddy’s chatter-whistles as he called squirrels over for us to feed in the park. Safety felt like the heft and softness of my down comforter, right after my parents tucked me in, kissed my on the forehead, and turned my nightlight on.
