Election Day

I have to be honest. I feel something like Pigpen from the Peanuts comic strip, but instead of wearing a cloud of dirt I am burdened by a cloud of impending doom.

I fear the outcome of the election. My friend and colleague Kerby Anderson, who has more understanding of a biblical view of government and public policy than anyone on the face of the planet, told me that there is a good possibility we may end up with a situation we've never seen before: not only would the president, Senate and House be of the same party, but there could be such a majority it would produce a filibuster-proof Senate. That means that the people at the top of the power ladder could push through anything and everything they want.

Thus the sense of impending doom.

But there is a truth I choose to cling to that is bigger and more powerful than the possibilities: God is in control.

Praise God, no matter who wins, God is in control!

No matter if the stock market tanks in response to the outcome of the election, God is in control.

No matter how dark the culture gets as government restraints to sin are removed, God is in control.

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except by God’s appointment, and the authorities that exist have been instituted by God. (Romans 13:1)

God is in control.

Breathe in. . . breathe out . . .  God is in control.

We as God's children must know that it was God's will the election went the way it did.

No matter what happens tonight, this was an historic election.

The first time in the nation's history that a Black man has been successfully nominated as a presidential candidate.

The first time women have featured so prominently in a presidential race.

Record early voting turn-out and a return to caring enough to vote.

Record numbers of first-time voters.

I'm still thinking, wondering what on EARTH I'll post up for tomorrow. But I am glad that this election has galvanized so many people, and helped us to evaluate and live out what and Whom we believe in.

God reigns above parties.

God's people are in both the Democratic and Republican party.

If Paul could build churches, mentor, encourage, and exhort in chains and under a corrupt Roman government, and God could exponentially multiply the people of God during the persecution of the 1st century church, I know we'll be okay.

Let us indeed pray for God's protection for all from violent and hateful men.  May this race mark a new era of racial reconciliation, especially among those who name the name of Jesus.

As I continue to let the import and historicity of today run like a script in the background of my head today, I am encouraged by a thought.

It has been pointed out that in order to let the glory and brilliance of diamonds shine more brightly, a jeweler will first spread out a black velvet cloth and then pour out or set his precious gems on the cloth.

And God said that we are "children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe" (Phil. 2:20).

We may be seeing a set-up where the darkness of a culture hostile to God and His values and His people is the backdrop for our "shininess."

Lord, by Your grace let us be found faithful to be shining stars!  And praise You for always, always, always being in control.

Perhaps in these days, like no other, we have the opportunity to let our lights shine.  Whatever or whoever God places over us in government, our eyes are toward Him who "sets up Kings and takes them down."  Let us reflect in our words and prayers confidence in Him and live lives that reflect integrity and hope.  Our citizenship is truly in heaven and as we represent the King here, may we do so with grace, truth, and good deeds so that none can criticize.

Midnight Prayer for Obama family tonight!
Today is a great day. A man of color has a chance to become President of the United States of America. While support for this brave man and his family is great, so is opposition. We all know that faith and prayer changes things. Isaiah 54:17 “No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgement you shall condemn.”
Tonight at midnight, we should all pray for the safety of Senator Barack Obama and his family. We should pray that he is given the strength he needs to lead our country. We should also thank God (no matter what name you call Him by) for all that he has brought us through and ask Him to stay by us.
Tonight at midnight – pray for the Obama family!
