1 Samuel 21 Truth Always Wins…Lies Always Loses
Why is it so easy to lie and hard to tell the truth? It is because we are all sinners and we listen to the father of lies, the devil himself, more than we listen to God. Jesus pointed that out in the NT. In reading the OT, we come to a passage in 1 Samuel where King David blatantly lied to the Priest Ahimelech about why he was alone and needed food and a sword. It seems that Ahimelech knew little about King David and King Saul’s circumstances, so he lied about why he was there. At first, it looks innocent on the surface because David is running away from Saul and is truly hungry. This is also true when we lie instead of telling the truth. How often have we found ourselves in a predicament where a lie would protect us now. However, the fruit of that lie will cause us many problems, as David found out.
What should King David have done? He knew he was lying and should have told the priest the truth. An old saying says: “Some go about to excuse David’s lying here: but that cannot be. The consequences were unfortunate…and afterward, he was extremely sad.” David has relied upon the Lord to help him, but he failed “big time this time.” David would soon regret this decision because an enemy of King Saul killed the priest Ahimelech and 85 other priests! (see 1 Samuel 22:22) And we regret our lies later. We try to ignore our lies, but a lie is a lie, and God hates lies and liars.
Today, remember truth always wins and liars always lose. Be a truth-teller today and every day.
