About EXPELLED, in Theaters Friday April 18 04.16.08

I do not usually promote a movie on this site, but this is an exception. EXPELLED, starring Ben Stein, is a look at how the issue of Origins is handled on many campuses and other academic settings today. I addressed this movie in a piece on NPR about 10 days ago.

The complexities of what sustains life and generates it raises the question of where it came from. Two key options are that life is a part of a natural process or it emerged through some kind of design. This movie is a documentary that asks key questions about origins, Darwinism and Intelligent Design– and the public square discussion that does (and does not) place about these themes by the way we as a society handle these issues. The movie asks us to consider how we as a society are pursuing such questions and how we should do so. It is well worth a look. I have seen the movie twice already and will go to a premiere tonight in Dallas. It is important to go this weekend to get a sense of what the discussion is about and as a way of saying the conversation is important. Here is more information about the movie. Here is a recent release on the movie:

Dear Friend of Expelled,

They’ve become enraged over it…
They’ve told movie theaters to reject it…
They’ve hurled false accusations against it…
They’ve bashed it in the press…

BUT THEY COULD NOT SHUT IT DOWN…

The most controversial film of 2008
Ben Stein’s “EXPELLED”
Opens on 1,000 movie screens this Friday, April 18!

Be there! We need your support!

Check HERE to see where EXPELLED is playing near you.

The EXPELLED controversy has catapulted to #1 most popular blog on the Internet (3/24/08) and #6 on Yahoo’s “Top Searches” (4/8/08), and driven 2,000,000 people to the movie website wondering,

“What is Ben Stein saying that has people so fired up?"

Ben Stein is being called both “an idiot” and “a genius”
Atheists are enraged by the movie, “crashing” EXPELLED screenings
Liberal movie critics are slamming EXPELLED, while leaders are raving
Organizations are urging theaters to reject the movie, while others are holding movie marathons for all Expelled showings at their theaters…
Ben Stein’s EXPELLED has struck a cultural NERVE as it exposes a modern day witch hunt in which scientists, educators and students are being persecuted because they dare to question Darwinism and argue that life may be the result of "intelligent design".

    Not so sure
Darrell — I really wish this film were not the vehicle for this sort of discussion. Even some conservative faith-science groups are concerned about its tone (see Reasons to Believe’s website — http://www.reasons.org/resources/apologetics/expelled.shtml). Notice that most of the endorsers above are culture warriors and not qualified scientists. I’m afraid this film is going to be another detriment to constructive, serious evangelical engagement with the natural sciences.

      expelled the movie
darrell; someone finally with courage and wealth is exposing the biggest scientific lie of the century and more. i believe God is behind this to awaken people to realize live just doesn’t appear out of nothing. people in the past believed in some greater being or several beings. they contributed the name God to it or them.what i really find sad is that men who are created beings THINK they can just say by way of theory that life began by BOOM!!!!!!! is intelectual sucide .when real science evidences intelegent design. i would challenge people to read up on answers in genesis or aig.com with ken ham a scientist that studies to discover the truth not ignore it and make it up because the findings don’t agree with a preconcieved belief that there is no God . well they can name the designer what they want but he gave us His name 2000 years ago. His name shall be called JESUS for He shall save His people from there Sins. Sin is the source of unbelief in God of the scriptures. God tells us in His word “i cannot lie”. your friend evangel

Anonymous (it would be nice to have a name):

Thanks for writing. I want to make it clear that in endorsing this movie and the idea of Intelligent Design is not the same thing as endorsing a specific interpretation of Genesis and origins. These are two distinct questions.

    Not So Sure dlb

I am aware of some of the concerns here. There is a part of me that shares them, but do not lose sight of the overall point. That is clear in the film. To the extent that the film raises the issue of our society being an open one for discussion, the movie is right on. The web site you note has not even seen the film. I have, three times.

Re: RTB website — yes but I know that some of the folks involved there have seen it and have confirmed those concerns in other fora.

I’ll go and see it for myself. One thing I certainly agree on is the importance of academic freedom.
