Broken Leadership – Why is Leadership Broken?

Leadership is broken today. The evidence abounds all around us.

*Leaders search for solutions only to discover bigger problems than ever.

*Followers seek for leaders of integrity only to find pursuers of self-interest.

*Organizations long for leaders who unify only to find controllers who divide.

*Staff members hope for leaders who value them only to find ambitious men and women who use them.

*Wives hope for strong men to lead them only to find passive men who avoid them.

*Children crave fathers who will nurture them only to find selfish men who ignore them.

Perhaps the greatest evidence of broken leadership in our world is the number of books that have been written on the topic. You can read thousands of pages on leadership methods, leadership impact, leadership ambitions, leadership achievements, leadership legacy, leadership habits, leadership and management, organizational leadership, personal leadership, ethical leadership, character and leadership, change and leadership. The beat goes on. And on. And on. And on.

Now large numbers of these books are helpful, especially when the ideas they present build on the foundation of whole leadership, though at least some of them appear to be written to give the author fame and fortune. These books contribute to the brokenness of leadership in our time.

Very few books address the ultimate question concerning leadership today. What is that ultimate question? Why is leadership broken? The answer? Because leaders are unbroken! Unbroken leaders can only produce broken leadership. Unbroken leaders who profess to serve their followers but who actually seek their own success by dominating their followers—and who do this in the name of Jesus—can only end up as failures in what matters the most, no matter how much power, fame, and success they gain.

Leadership is broken today because leaders are unbroken. What this world needs is broken leaders who can lead the way to unbroken leadership. Are you up for becoming a broken leader? Let’s grow together in brokenness so we can lead together in unbroken leadership.
