Let’s Talk About Heaven!

“In my Father’s house are many rooms…. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me….” John 14:1-3

Have you noticed that kids have lots of questions about Heaven and about God? They are naturally curious. Where does God live? Where is heaven? What is heaven like?

My twin sister and I shared a bedroom when we were growing up. Many times when my mom and/or dad were tucking us under the covers of our twin beds and saying our prayers we would pepper them with questions. It may have been to avoid bedtime, but mostly our questions revealed the serious thoughts of our little hearts. Those were great learning times for us.

One of those times, we were talking about heaven. My mom was explaining that after Jesus died and rose again, He returned to heaven. “What was He doing in heaven?,” we asked. She told us that one of the things He was doing was preparing ‘mansions’ for us to live in one day. Jenny’s immediate reaction was, “I hope my mansion will be right next to His.”

One of my favorite children’s books is by Debby Anderson called “Let’s Talk About Heaven.” Why do I like it so much? Because it answers the questions we all have about heaven. It’s written for ages 4–7, but I believe both young and old can learn some valuable lessons.

Take a walk with me through these colorful, delightful pages. Let’s Talk About Heaven*…

Who’s going to be there? – your grandpa or your baby sister, people from every tribe and nation (Rev. 5:9). Our favorite Bible characters – can you imagine what it will be like to meet them and have a conversation? Wouldn’t you love to go fishing with Peter?

What will we be like in Heaven? We will (finally) be perfect. No more sin. No more pain. No more death. And God will wipe away our tears (Rev. 21:4). And our loved ones who have struggled physically on this earth will be able to run and jump and see and hear (Isa. 35). How awesome!!

What will our forever home be like? It will be more beautiful than we can imagine (Rev. 21). Maybe we’ll have a parade along the streets of gold!

What will we do in heaven? Worship our Heavenly Father around His throne. Sing with the angels (in perfect pitch!). Fellowship with those we love over endless cups of coffee. Or maybe bake cookies with grandma. There will be time to learn all kinds of things and satisfy our curiosity.

But the best thing about heaven? We will be home with Jesus in His presence forever and ever!

Sounds great, right? Sounds almost like heaven…actually it sounds exactly like heaven.

Even as a young child, I longed for heaven. My mother tells me that one day she was explaining the Rapture to me–that Jesus would come back to earth one day to take us to heaven. Perhaps it had been an extremely hard day, because my response was, “Well, why doesn’t He just come right now and get us out of all this mess?!”

Right now, we can only imagine what it will be like, based on what Scripture tells us. But one day, for those who have trusted in Christ as their Lord and Savior, we will see Him face to face. We will spend eternity with Him!

I can hardly wait until Heaven!!

*NOTE: These questions are covered in “Let’s Talk About Heaven” by Debby Anderson (David C. Cook Publishing). I highly recommend this book for you and your child(ren) to read together. You will be blessed!
