Making Plans With God

Me: Have y’all ever heard that little joke, “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans?”

Kids: No. That’s a joke? I think I have?

Me: Okay. I think we can all agree that if it has to be explained, then it’s probably not a funny joke. So, let me break it down. Jeremiah tells us that God knows everything about us. God knows the plans He has for us. But not just any plans. Plans to make us successful in many ways and not hurt us. Plans to give us hope and a future. Who’s the greatest future and hope ever promised?

Kids: Jesus!

Me: Yes! All of these plans that God has for us cannot happen outside of the promise of Jesus. Because we belong to God, the Lord has these amazing plans for us. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we have all of these amazing things that we’ve already received and promises yet to be fulfilled. It’s like Christmas today and Christmas tomorrow!

Kids: Extra Christmases!!!!

Me: Haha!!!! Kinda like that! But a Christmas of the promises of God.

Reflect: What plans have you made that may have clashed with God’s plans for you? Did God’s plans result in something way better than anything you could’ve imagined? Your individual plans aren’t bad especially if you filter them through the promises of God.
