Breakthrough, the Movie: Questions to Consider

    April 9, 2019 / 0 Comments

Seana Scott and I are at the national conference for the Evangelical Press Association. Tonight we saw a pre-release showing of the faith film "Breakthrough" starring Chrissy Metz (This Is Us). I invited Seana to contribute a guest post, and she offered the following good words:  John Smith and his two basketball buddies do what young men naturally do—egg each other on to take boyish risks. And playing on an iced-over lake, all three kids fell in as the frozen shell suddenly cracked open.  By the time paramedics pulled John out of the ice, he was cold, limp, and unresponsive. After more than thirty minutes of medical effort to find…

Review: Risen Movie: Through the Eyes of a Soldier

    February 19, 2016 / 0 Comments

Today I have a guest post from my friend, Chrissy Segulin, who lives in Vicenza, Italy. She and her husband, Dave, attended the European premiere of Risen.   Like CSI, the film “Risen”—a Sony/TriStar production that opened today—starts after “the main event” has happened, and it follows the main character as he seeks to piece together evidence. Set in Jerusalem at the time of Christ, the story begins with the Crucifixion rather than ending with it. It follows the fictional hero, Clavius (Joseph Fiennes, Shakespeare in Love), an ambitious, high-ranking Roman tribune, and his aide, Lucius (Tom Felton, Harry Potter), as they sort rumor from reality. Clavius has already seen…

    “War Room” Mentoring

September 4, 2015 / Comments Off on “War Room” Mentoring

Regardless of your evaluation of the new Christian film "War Room", Clara and Elizabeth paint a beautiful picture of organic mentoring. Personally, I loved the film, maybe because I'm a friend of the leading lady, but also because it illustrates the power of prayer when we get serious. True, the results in the movie often take longer than a few months–usually years. God could have worked through the husband first, and there are no guarantees.  But I've personally seen and experienced prayer changing hearts and lives, including my own. In addition I also noticed an important subtheme: the power of a natural mentoring relationship initiated and guided by prayer. Consider…
