    Why You Need Your Why!

Have you ever felt lost in life?  You know, a time when you felt like you were going through the motions of life but you were not really sure where you were going?  Sort of lost in a haze of uncertainty that made you question your very existence?  Perhaps, you've even grown numb to life and just live life day to day with hopes for something better.  Ever wonder how you got in this position?    Personally I think some of it has to do with that fact that many don’t know or lose the “why” for their lives.  In my opinion, the “why” is critical for us to live…

You have a dream you believe God gave you…and it shatters. Where is God when dreams die?

Just today I heard a terrific businessman say that he tries to set his goals for the following year in mid-November so he can ease off and let them marinate during the holidays, then tweak them and be ready to charge forward come January 1. And immediately I thought of Phil Vischer, aka Bob the Tomato and the creator of VeggieTales. If ever anyone set a big hairy audacious goal it was Phil.    Phil believed God wanted him to create a “Christian Disney” company. He even called it “Big Idea.”  The company soared. Millions were blessed.  Then Big Idea went bankrupt. Phil had to sell Bob and his entire…

Living for the Glory of God

When Anna and I sat in carpool a few weeks ago, she asked me, “Mom, how do I know that I’m glorifying God?”   As believers we want to convey Christ-likeness to the world. We want to show everyone something different about us. So we challenge ourselves to “be the light and salt of the world” and we put ourselves out there for others to see something extra-ordinary about us.   We encourage our loved ones and other believers to live that way too. Not too long ago, I wrote about glorifying God at school. You can read about it here.  So how do we know that our lives…

A Plan With A Purpose…The Journey of Ice Cream

The first bite is scrumptiously delicious and out of this world; with each additional bite comes the most pleasant and delightful experience to your sweet-tooth taste buds.  I love to savor every moment as I enjoy the cold creamy texture and luscious taste of ice cream.  Nothing is better on a hot summer day and if you’re like me, you love the opportunity to take a journey with the sweet and creamy delight.  Excitement fills the air as you walk into the local ice cream store.  Choices, choices, and more choices are in front of you as you scale the counter and look at the array of flavors that are…

    Live Out Your Purpose

Do you want your life to make a difference? Look around you. How satisfied are you with your life? What about purpose? Do you seek to live out your purpose?   My drive to succeed as a college student was solely to find purpose in changing the world. I wanted to have an impact on others so badly that I worked really hard. Never mind my pursuit of excellence in my education, I served at church and I even adopted a child from Guatemala—okay not really, I just sponsored one. Even though I barely had enough money to eat in college, I still made sure Manuel had his monthly donation.…

    Becoming Fully Human

For the past seven years, my favorite go-to t-shirt has been a maroon one that simply reads “becoming fully human.” Never mind that I didn’t have a clue what the phrase meant. The shirt was soft with a lived-in feeling and I liked the abstract design on the front. It also was a great conversation starter. The inked cashier at Whole Foods told me that he loved “that band” and someone else commented “surely there is alien life somewhere out there.” Hmm… somehow I don’t think that is what Oklahoma Baptist University had in mind when they chose “becoming fully human” as the theme of “Welcome Week,” the orientation week…

    What’s My Purpose in Life?

A dear younger friend of mine recently posted this question on a forum: “Do you feel that you have a great mission or purpose in life? “I do feel like I’m made for something more than this, but whatever it is I can’t reach it, or find out what it is. I do feel as though I have a great purpose or mission in life—I’m sure I do!!! Why can I just not figure it out? “Was I born in the wrong time? My roommate says that I’m like a young person who thinks they were meant for more. She says hardly anyone here has a great life of purpose…
