Rhythms and reflections

Christmas day is past once again. The rhythm of life moves on. All the shopping, wrapping, cooking and celebrating winds down and we reflect on another year passing. Attention turns to finishing up 2011 as we anticipate 2012.

In past generations the church celebrated a common calendar marking and celebrating significant events marking the life of our common heritage in the Lord. God’s people Israel celebrated annually various feasts to remind them of God’s provision and love for them. Rhythm and reflection became a part of their heritage, a regular opportunity to be reminded of their history and of God’s faithfulness.

Holidays provide a reminder and the comfort of a rhythm and routine. They connect us with our history. Lamentations reminds us God’s loyal kindness, goodness and faithfulness which are fresh every new day:

The Lord’s loyal kindness never ceases;
his compassions never end.
They are fresh every morning;
your faithfulness is abundant!
“My portion is the Lord,” I have said to myself,
so I will put my hope in him.
The Lord is good to those who trust in him,
to the one who seeks him.
It is good to wait patiently
for deliverance from the Lord. Lamentations 3:22-26

Fresh compassions, a new start, one in whom we can confidently put our trust. Whatever 2011 brought you, 2012 promises fresh provision as we focus our hope in Him. The rhythms of day and night bring fresh reminders and a promise of deliverance. Reflecting on His faithfulness and goodness in 2011 and choosing to put our hopes for 2012 in His loyal love is our best preparation for a New Year.
