All the girls in my extended family love to get together for “movie night” when we can watch Sandra Bullock in “Miss Congeniality.” The plot goes something like this: Clumsy FBI agent with scary eyebrows and nasty hair undergoes metamorphosis to work undercover as beauty pageant contestant.

We'd crack the perforation on the Advent calendar to reveal the day's picture--a Nutcracker, perhaps, or a doll, or maybe a wise man preparing for his journey, depending on that year's theme. Or we'd break another link on our homemade chain made of red and green construction paper. As the chain shrunk, our excitement grew.

We started our Christmas lists in May. A new doll would arrive on the shelves, or a friend would get the latest tape from some band. "Put it on your Christmas list," mom would say.

I love Christmas, because the Incarnation of Christ boggles my mind. That the second Person of the Trinity would choose to live as we live, be tempted and tried as we are, and love and delight in us, as flawed and base as we are...astounds me.

Newsweek's Gay Marriage Propaganda Piece

The Dec. 15 issue of Newsweek features a breathtakingly biased essay called "The Religious Case for Gay Marriage." The author, Lisa Miller, has a high view of homosexuality and a low view of scripture—and an even lower view of those of us who dare trust in God's word. (Managing Editor Jon Meacham supports Ms. Miller's piece in his column: he says the "conservative resort to biblical authority is the worst kind of fundamentalism.")

Most of us heard of the recent Christmas controversy over the atheist display next to the nativity scene in the Washington State courthouse. And just this morning I spoke with a college student from a nearby state university who encountered other collegians passing out what he at first thought were Christian tracts only to discover they were actually arguments against God from the atheistic group on campus. It seems the “new atheism” is evangelistic in its fervor.

Early Monday morning, I began to smell smoke coming through the vents in our kitchen, and by now, back in our bedroom. I got up early to finish some work, but, first turned our thermostat up. It was 4:45 a.m. Evidences of preparation were everywhere: packages to be wrapped for mailing, paper, ribbons, tags were piled all over the dining room table; sacks of throw away papers from my husband’s study to be taken out; half emptied boxes of Christmas decorations.

Most of us recognize that certain things in the Bible were written for certain times, certain cultures, and we don't practice them today. For example:

- do we practice the Sabbath from sun-down on Friday to sun-down on Saturday?

- do we sacrifice doves at the birth of a child?

- do we greet one another with a holy kiss (on the lips, no less!)?

- do we refrain from braiding our hair?

Often, people refer to Sunday services as “worship” service. Even more commonly, congregants refer to the musical portion of their service as “worship.”

Black Friday and Dark Hearts

"Black Friday," the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S., is called that because it usually allows retailers to go into the black. But this year, the early morning shopping frenzy turned deadly. A Walmart employee was trampled to death by New York shoppers who broke down the door before dawn, anxious to get into the store and get their hands on the sale merchandise.

The next day, the Dallas Morning News carried a short story providing analysis of why shoppers turned into killers.
