Act 1: Trying to Impact Hollywood

My time in California is almost up. It is always a treat to be here and teach two weeks at Talbot. Today I met with two key figures for ACT 1. This is an organization training people in Hollywood who are Christian to let their voice be heard. One teaches at Bethel Seminary; the other writes scripts for series like the 70’s show. Not your normal combination.

We discussed Christians in Hollywood and how this organization helps prepare them for what is ahead. It is exciting to see engagement of the Arts by Christians (Talbot also has a wonderful film school that is emerging as significant). Working in Hollywood is not easy and the church mostly has either ignored or complained about Hollywood (often for good reason). But why not try to produce work that points to important life values through story? After all, much of the Bible is narrative. I was impressed and hope that Act 1 continues what they have started: to train people to do quality work and be a voice in the cultural world.
