Acknowledge Me

Jesus stated many tough things. He made statements that are challenging and cause us to think about our dedication to him. One statement in particular that often comes to mind is found in Matthew chapter 10.

“Whoever, then, acknowledges me before people, I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever denies me before people, I will deny him also before my Father in heaven.” Matthew 10:32-33
He spoke these words to his disciples just before he sent them out to begin their public ministry. These words almost seem like a threat but Jesus knew what his followers would face as they proclaimed his message. At first glance these words seem to indicate that his disciples may shrink back when asked about their connection to Jesus. I believe Jesus meant so much more than just his desire for us to acknowledge our relationship with him. Jesus wanted much more than an acknowledgment.
I remember when I proposed to my wife. Prior to my proposal I would introduce her as Becki, my girlfriend. After my proposal and her positive acceptance (thank God) everything would change. I would now tell anyone and everyone that she was my fiancée, wife to be. To remove any doubt of my intentions and the depth of our connection she would wear on her finger a symbol of our relationship. Our relationship was to be different than any other relationship we would ever have going forward. We would take every opportunity to announce our engagement and show people our love for one another. Imagine what would happen if I was embarrassed to introduce Becki as my future wife. The relationship wouldn’t last very long.
I believe this is what Jesus was saying to his disciples. While the word he used was “acknowledges” what he wanted from his disciples an undeniable declaration of love and dedication before all who would ask about their relationship with him. This acknowledgment goes well beyond words but is to be expressed in all our actions and attitudes.
• Where in your in life do you struggle with acknowledging Jesus as your Lord?
• With whom in your life do you avoid acknowledging Jesus?

    Amen

That is an amazing and wonderful analogy to explain that passage. Thank you so much for sharing. I was reading something else in that chapter recently and yes, some of the saying of Jesus are hard to deal with even for those who wear the label of Christian. Thanks for shedding light on this passage.
