Been to the Mountaintop: Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I dedicate today's post to one of my heroes of the faith, Martin Luther King, Jr., who was assassinated as he stood on the terrace of the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis on April 4th, 44 years ago.

I dedicate today's post to one of my heroes of the faith, Martin Luther King, Jr., who was assassinated as he stood on the terrace of the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis on April 4th, 44 years ago.

If you don't have a lot of time to listen to the last public appearance he made (in support of sanitation workers), watch this video (credit to ct91rs), which encapsulates the last riveting minute of his final speech.

If you have more time, here are links to a two part audio recording of his entire Mountaintop Speech (credit to jamminondakeys). The foreshadowing language regarding his death is chilling, and his stirring interpretations and applications of the Biblical narrative are unparalleled.

Part 1

Part 2

We are not yet in the Promised Land, but we are so much closer because of the efforts of Martin Luther King, Jr., and ordinary people like you and me, who clothed themselves with God-given courage, and set out to right wrongs in the hopes of fulfilling Galatians 3:28. I hope to be as brave.

Striving for and Dreaming of the Promised Land,

Sharifa

Sharifa Stevens is a Manhattan-born, Bronx-raised child of the King, born to Jamaican immigrants, and currently living in Dallas. Sharifa's been singing since she was born. Her passion is to serve God's kingdom by leading His people in worship through music, speaking and writing, and relationships with people. Her heart is also unity, inspired by John. Sharifa hates exercise but likes Chipotle, bagels with a schmeer and lox, salmon sushi, chicken tikka, curried goat (yeah, it's good) with rice and peas, and chocolate lava cakes. She's been happily married to Jonathan since 2006...and he buys her Chipotle.
