He Was Not What They Expected
He criticized the prideful, religious elite and dined with criminals and tax collectors. He spoke to shunned women and healed unclean and contagious lepers. He welcomed little children and gave mercy to the desperate and the weak. (Para español, lea abajo.)
“Who is this supposed King? He does not behave as we had expected,” they thought.
They expected a warrior king, not a humble servant.
They expected a savior from foreign oppression, not a Savior from their sins.
They expected their long-awaited ruler to ride victoriously on a horse.
The King of Kings rode peacefully on a young donkey. (Zech. 9:9; Matt. 21:5)
They waved palm branches and put their coats on the ground yelling, “Hosanna! (Save us now!) Hosanna! (Save us now!) Hosanna! (Save us now!)” (Matt. 21:9; Mark 11:9)
Save them from what? What did they want?
He healed them, taught them, loved them, and corrected them. He pointed them toward heaven. But that was not what they wanted. They wanted what they wanted. They wanted power, prestige, and prosperity.
So they manipulated the foreign rulers they hated to declare this King a criminal. They stripped him of his clothing and sold it for sport. They spit on him, mocked him, and beat him.
“They crowned him with thorns.
They pierced his hands and feet.
The sinless, unleavened Bread was broken.
The Passover Lamb’s blood was spilled.”
He endured the ultimate suffering. He died a criminal’s death. He was buried in a borrowed tomb.
This was not what was expected.
But three days later women—the women disciples—had news, glorious and angelic news. “He has risen! ¡Él ha resucitado! He has risen! ¡Él ha resucitado! I have seen the Lord! ¡He visto al Señor!” (Matt. 28:6; Mark 16:6; Luke 24:6; John 20:18)
Then they saw him and they knew. And now, so do we. We know what he meant when he said, “This is my body, which is given for you… And this cup is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins… Do this in remembrance of me.” (Matt. 26:26–28; Luke 22:19–20)
Not what was expected, but better for eternity. This is our King.
Él no era lo que ellos esperaban
Él criticó a los orgullosos, a la élite religiosa y comió con delincuentes y recaudadores de impuestos. Él habló con mujeres rechazadas y curó a los impuros y contagiosos leprosos. Recibió a los niños pequeños y mostró misericordia a los desesperados y a los débiles.
“¿Quién es este supuesto Rey? Él no se comporta como nosotros esperábamos”, todos pensaban.
Ellos esperaban a un rey guerrero, no un humilde siervo.

Pero el Rey de Reyes cabalgó pacíficamente montado sobre un burrito. (Zacarías 9:9; Mateo 21:5)
Ellos agitaron hojas de palma y tendieron sus prendas sobre suelo gritando: “¡Hosanna! (¡Sálvanos ahora!) ¡Hosanna! (¡Sálvanos ahora!) ¡Hosanna! (¡Sálvanos ahora!)” (Mateo 21:9; Marcos 11:9)
¿Salvarlos de qué? ¿Qué es lo que ellos querían?
Él les sanó, les enseñó, les amó y les corrigió. Él los encaminó hacia el cielo. Pero eso no era lo que ellos querían. Ellos querían lo que ellos querían. Querían poder, prestigio y prosperidad.
Así que ellos manipularon a los gobernantes extranjeros que ellos odiaban para que ellos declararan a este Rey un criminal. Ellos lo despojaron de su vestimenta y tiraron dados por su ropa. Lo escupieron, se burlaron de él y lo golpearon.
“Ellos coronaron su cabeza con espinas.
Ellos traspasaron sus manos y pies.
El inocente Pan sin levadura fue quebrantado.
La sangre del Cordero Pascual fue derramada.”
Él soportó hasta lo último del sufrimiento. Murió la muerte de un criminal. Fue sepultado en una tumba prestada.
Esto no era lo que se esperaba.
Pero tres días después, las mujeres—las mujeres discípulas—tenían noticias, gloriosas y angélicas noticias. “¡Él ha resucitado! ¡Él ha resucitado! ¡He visto al Señor!” (Mateo 28:6; Marcos 16:6; Lucas 24:6; Juan 20:18)
Entonces le vieron y lo supieron. Y ahora, nosotros también lo sabemos. Sabemos lo que quiso decir cuando dijo, “Esto es mi cuerpo, entregado por ustedes… y esta copa es el nuevo pacto en mi sangre, que es derramada por muchos para el perdón de pecados… Hagan esto en memoria de mí” (Mateo 26:26-28; Lucas 22:19-20).
