A Date Which Will Live in Infamy

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).

The word “infamy” is defined by Dictionary.com as “extremely bad reputation, public reproach, or strong condemnation as the result of a shameful, criminal, or outrageous act”. Thus one year ago today, June 26th, 2015, the day the Supreme Court of the United States declared that homosexuals had a Constitutional right to marry, is a date of infamy. The Court based their decision upon… well… upon philosophic talk that was devoid of wisdom. After all, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom” (Proverbs 1:7, NIV 1984). The word “fools” describes persons who are morally deficient. Their judgment was based upon moralistic talk that was devoid of moral foundation. They have planted their feet firmly in mid air. But I’ve gotten ahead of myself.

Now there are those who ask me, “What’s the big deal?” There are those who confront me and say, “Why is this your one issue?” I’ve been asked why I don’t use the same amount of time and effort to rail against divorce or the rich or any number of other issues. But their question, to me, is like asking the Allies why they were fighting the Germans in Belgium and the Ardennes during the winter of 1944-1945. The answer is simple: “This is where the enemy has attacked.” And when I say “enemy” I mean the real enemy: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12, NIV 1984). It is he, “The god of this age [who] has blinded the minds of those who do not believe” (2 Corinthians 4:4).

Yes, all other sins are just as deadly. (Read the final verses of Romans 1 if you do not believe me.) Divorce? God has told us he hates it (Malachi 2:16) and Jesus said it was not the way marriage was from the beginning (Matthew 19:8). Hmmm, think about that for a moment… Now if divorce was a huge battle today with lines drawn and the schools, the media and the President saying, “Divorce is something we should celebrate. It has no effect on children or society. It’s actually a wonderful thing and anyone who disagrees with this is just a bigot. The Bible has nothing to say about the subject and neither did Jesus.”, then I would be arguing against such lies. But that battle occurred before I arrived on the scene. Yes, occasionally some foolish person, sometimes even a person who calls themselves a Christian, will stand up and say, “I believe God has released me from this marriage because I am no longer happy and God would not want me to be unhappy.” Then you will heal me rail against such foolishness.

As for the rich? Well, there is nothing in the Bible that tells us it is a sin to be rich. There is, however, clear teaching that being envious is sin (Galatians 5:21, Titus 3:3, etc.). The problem today is that too many equate being rich with being greedy. The two things are not synonymous. It is God who gives wealth (1 Samuel 2:7, Ecclesiastes 5:19, etc.). Wealth can be a blessing and it can be a curse (Proverbs 13:8, Ecclesiastes 5:12, etc.). Yes, as clear as day, there is a great deal of warning to the rich in Scripture (Mark 10:25, 1 Timothy 6:9, etc.), but the same can be said about the sexually immoral (1 Corinthians 6:9, Revelation 21:8, etc.).

Consider the progression of the worship of the gods of sexuality and self: Spouses (more so wives than husbands) have been sacrificed as men have run their course in order to chase their false goddess. Children have been sacrificed, not only by fathers and mothers in divorce, but literally sacrificed on the altar of sexual freedom, slaughtered through abortion by their own parents! Jesus, spoke of a time when, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12, NIV). (And there have been over 50 million abortions in the United States since the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973.) Next we have the rise of homosexuality. One writer said that Homosexuality is the “ultimate in exalting the individual over social order.”[1] (One should also remember that God made marriage, male and female, complementing components made to come together, and He patterned it to be like Christ and His people—Ephesians 5:31-32—therefore, I postulate, a rejection of the other in sexuality and marriage, a rejection of God’s pattern, is actually a rejection of mankind’s need of Christ.)

What follows on this pathway away from God? We’re seeing it already: Transgenderism. (My computer doesn’t even recognize “transgenderism” as a word yet. I expect such political incorrectness will be rectified in newer versions of the software.) One prominent psychologist has called transgenderism a “mental disorder”.[2] Just think about it: There are people who so dislike what God has created them to be, who so hate what they are, that they willingly have their reproductive parts removed, ensuring that they will never be able to reproduce.

But this is all part of the Romans 1 moral slide, the rejection of nature and nature’s God, the exchanging of what is natural for what is unnatural, the defacing of the image of God even to the emasculation[3] of one’s own body. As the Bible says, people will continue to “invent ways of doing evil” (Romans 1:30, NIV). Through Isaiah God said, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter” (Isaiah 5:20, NIV). I think of the PETA people or those who mourn the death of some celebrated animal (or even just a beached whale), yet fully support a mother’s aborting her unborn child in any circumstances. I think of those who conflate murder and the death penalty, saying, “Putting a murderer to death makes us just like him.” I think of the advocates for these sins and heresies, those who encourage and lead others down the path of destruction. Jesus said, “Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!” (Matthew 18:7, NIV). The Supreme Court Justices, the President, the lying “educators” and media, the false teachers and preachers, all will answer to God.

Long ago, the prophets spoke to people just like these, saying, “You have wearied the Lord with your words. But you say, ‘How have we wearied him?’ Because you say, “Everyone who does evil is good in the Lord’s opinion, and he delights in them” (Malachi 2:17).

I respond as Jesus did to some false teachers of His day, “You are badly mistaken!” (Mark 12:27).

I have written several columns on this subject. I hope to share several more. I write them not because of a hatred for homosexuals or transgendered people, but because there needs to be voices of truth to counter the voices of falsehood out in the world today. “Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron” (1 Timothy 4:2, NIV). “For there will be a time when people will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves [who tell them what they want to hear]” (1 Timothy 4:3). “[The] god of this age has blinded the minds of those who do not believe” (2 Corinthians 4:4). So I take a stand here on this issue, homosexuality and the oxymoron called “homosexual marriage”. My main weapon is “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17, NIV).

When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you must certainly die,’ and you do not warn the wicked about his behavior, the wicked man will die for his iniquity, but I will hold you accountable for his death. But if you warn the wicked man to change his behavior, and he refuses to change, he will die for his iniquity, but you have saved your own life” (Ezekiel 33:8-9).

Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but prefer that the wicked change his behavior and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil deeds! Why should you die” (Ezekiel 33:11).

Repent, then, and turn to God [through Jesus Christ], so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord” (Acts 3:19).

This is today’s battleground. We are told in Ecclesiastes, “For everything there is an appointed time, and an appropriate time for every activity on earth”. This includes, “a time to keep silent, and a time to speak” (Eccl. 3:1, 7). This is the time to speak, a time to love those heading towards a Christ-less eternity by warning them of their destructive and sinful paths. Proverbs 24:11 tells us, “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering towards slaughter” (NIV). This is love. This is what Christ Himself did (Luke 20:21).

[3] As of this time I could not find a parallel female word for “emasculate”.

"Rescued, ransomed, and saved because of the love of God the Father, through the regeneration of the Holy Spirit, thanks to faithful preachers and teachers of the Word, attained by the perfect life and merit of Jesus the Messiah, His substitutionary death and physical resurrection from the dead. Completely undeserved and gifted to me." The author would label himself a Christ follower, an Evangelical Christian with strong Reformed beliefs. He loves discussing and debating the two "taboo" subjects: Politics and Religion. He tries to read and listen to a minimum of fifty books a year and realizes that no matter what topic or genre, whether Bible, theology, Christianity, history, biography, philosophy, political, social commentary, pop-culture, or even fiction, they all tie together in the spider's web of worldview. His favorite authors are C.S. Lewis, Francis Schaeffer, James R. White, Gregory Koukl, R.C. Sproul, J. Gresham Machen, G.K. Chesterton, J. Budziszewski, and Peter Kreeft. He loves Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Voddie Baucham, Paul Washer, and Dwight L. Moody. He enjoys watching the YouTube channels of John Cooper at Cooper Stuff, Doug Wilson at Blog and Mablog, Alisa Childers, Allen Parr at The Beat, and Melissa Dougherty. His hobbies are generally reading and writing, music, hiking, and laughing. He has been writing songs/lyrics since the age of eight and has played in a few Christian Rock bands. He has written poetry, several biblical studies over the past decades, and has one finished book manuscript entitled, “Shaken Faith: When God Has Let You Down”. He has also written for the now defunct Examiner website as the Philadelphia Christian Perspectives Examiner. He wishes he could write some fiction.

     Wise words. I heard a pastor…

    Wise words.

I heard a pastor ask a man who came to him for counseling regarding his divorce, "why do you want to divorce" and he answered 'because I don't love her anymore.' To that the Pastor said, "so you have decided to disobey. God then?" The man was upset but the Pastor said, "that is what the Bible says…men love your wives. There is no clause in there for divorce…it is because of the hardness of your heart."

When we choose to accept what the world says rather than what God says, there is hardness in our hearts. The pain that the lies of the enemy has produced is mind-boggling if you stop and think.

You have rightly said this is the time to speak. Dietrich Bonheiffer said it well " to be silent in the face of evil is to say you accept it…"

Thank you for speaking up. The German Pastors in WWII turned a blind eye and 6 miillion were executed. Will we turn a blind eye?
