Looking for God in America

You’re sitting at a park. Watching kids play. Drinking your coffee. Someone walks up and says, “Hi, I’m new around here, and I was looking for God. Can you tell me where to find Him?”

Your answer is filmed. Others are filmed. The answers become a documentary, Looking for God in America.

This is the brainchild and ongoing dream of three women: Donna Renee Anderson, Angela Seagler, and Laura Singleton. The project began in the summer of 2006 and is about to rev up again as the ladies hit the east coast on their journey to find God throughout the whole of the US.

They spend their days driving to new places, interviewing strangers to find out who they think God is, staying with acquaintances (or acquaintances of acquaintances), and praying, lots and lots of praying. For without God, this project loses everything, including its name.

A dream so impossible, so crazy, so surreal, until three women got in a car and just began living it out. I’ll be following their journey throughout June—wishing to be in the car with them at times and at others glad to be in my own little bed. And, I encourage you to check them out too.

There’s so much to be seen in the commonality of humanity, even as so much differs. So much pain, joy, and seeking. People really are always seeking, and I forget that until I hear the answers these women are getting. Besides that, there’s so much inspiration in seeing people follow their dreams—and so much conviction (as I sit safely on my own little bed).

So, get to know these ladies. Pray for them and those they touch. And, root them on. The courage to follow a dream always needs encouragement.

Jamie Lath is a middle child that has no baby picture without her older sister in it. Even with only two siblings, she grew up with family everywhere because all her aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, and even second-cousins lived in her hometown. With forty people at her birthday parties (all relatives) and her sister in every picture, she knows a little about community, and it's everlastingness. This has brought most of her ministry focus into meeting people where they're at, listening closely (especially to those who feel voiceless and like no one is listening), and helping them find God's voice in the mix. Jamie graduated with a BA in Communication Studies from the University of North Texas. Following a year of teaching English in China, she returned to the states to attend Dallas Theological Seminary. She received a Th.M. with a focus on Media Arts. Her background in the arts (ballet, writing, and acting) has given her an understanding of how creative expressions can give people a safe place to begin exploring how to use their voice and how it can touch hearts to hear God’s voice. She also blogs at I just called to say "Olive Juice."

    THANK YOU for shining light

THANK YOU for shining light on these three and their work. I amvery biased, but I think that Angela, Donna Renee and Laura bring such unique brilliance and sensitivity to the work, that it can’t help but be good – varied, nuanced, poignant.

I’m excited about viewing their findings! I hope they go to the Bronx…:o)

    Well, you know…
I’m rather biased myself when it comes to their brilliance, but bias or not, light needs to be shone on those hearing the call of God and actually doing something about it, amen?

    Taking a Stand for Christ
Thank you for your website. It is truly a blessing for these ladies to step out on faith and make this journey. I would love to travel with them. I am passionately taking a stand for the cause of Christ everywhere I go – especially in my college classroom in Berkeley, CA.

      Praying for you
I pray that as you walk through life you may be able to see others as God does and continue to be His instrument to bring more grace and healing to their lives. It’s too bad the ladies have already gone out west because I’m sure they’d love to meet you. Perhaps if they ever venture out that way again.
