Seeking First the Kingdom of God

What does it really mean to seek first the kingdom of God? We tend to just sail over this command from the mouth of Jesus rather than really letting it sink in deeply.

As I adjust to the schedule of being a new mom, a wife, a writer, and much more, sometimes my role as a daughter of the most high God gets pushed into the background. The urgent tasks of life tend to crowd out the really important ones. I wake up with the intent on spending time with the Lord FIRST, but something comes up, and that’s all she wrote!

I think that getting back to Christ as our first love is actually supposed to be simpler than we make it. Seeking Him first is not supposed to be a duty or a drudge. It’s supposed to be a way of Him taking our burdens on Himself. His yoke is easy, and His burden is light. He said, "Seek first the kingdom" in the context of exhorting us not to worry about our daily tasks and responsibilities. He wants us to transcend the daily drudgery and take several minutes out of each day to re-center our lives around Him.

This verse also includes a fascinating promise that we can cling to: "all of these things will be added to you." When I think of someone who truly personifies this verse, Mary of Bethany comes to mind. She knew what it meant to worship in spirit and truth. She was able to quiet her mind and heart and center her life around the Savior, despite Martha’s huffing and clattering around in the kitchen. I admire Mary for that.

Today, let’s make it a point to clear our schedules and "seek Him first" above all else. Nothing is more urgent. Nothing is more important.
