Slavery and Abortion in a Nutshell

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.”

Proverbs 14:14

In these most recent heated debates, I thought some food for thought might be appropriate:

  • SLAVERY existed in America for about 300 years.
  • It is possible that up to Approximately 60 million human beings died in and due to the American version of slavery during that time.[1]
  • Half the country believed they were “free” to own slaves and that it was their “right.” (Constitutional right, certainly. God-given right even.)
  • Many argued that blacks and Africans were not even human beings but were property. Who were others to tell them what to do with their own property?
  • The Supreme Court had supported their views.
  • Those who held these views believe the government should assist and aid them in their evil and even force the enlistment of those who vehemently disagreed. (See the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.)
  • Some who called themselves Christians supported this evil and voted for candidates and politicians who promised to continue and expand the right to own slaves.
  • Those who opposed were labelled as evil

What is our right and proper view of the above evils and proponents of those evils today?

  • Abortion existed in America for about 50 years.
  • Over 60 million human beings have died by abortion in America during that time. (Abortion is the number one cause of death in the world each year.)
  • Half the country seems to believe they are “free” to abort/destroy their own offspring in the womb and that it is their “right.” (Constitutional right, maybe. God-given right even.)
  • The Supreme Court had supported their views.
  • Those who held these views believe the government should assist and aid them in their evil and even force the enlistment of those who vehemently disagreed. (Government tax revenues for Planned Parenthood, Hobby Lobby Supreme Court Case, etc.)
  • Many argue that babies in the womb are not even human beings but are simply blobs of cells or intruders… or something.
  • Some who call themselves Christians supported this evil and voted for candidates and politicians who promised to continue and expand the right to destroy one’s own baby in the womb.
  • Those who opposed were labelled as evil.

The similarities are astounding.

Food for thought.

“You must remember that some things legally right are not morally right.”

Abraham Lincoln

[1] This is the highest estimate I could find anywhere.

"Rescued, ransomed, and saved because of the love of God the Father, through the regeneration of the Holy Spirit, thanks to faithful preachers and teachers of the Word, attained by the perfect life and merit of Jesus the Messiah, His substitutionary death and physical resurrection from the dead. Completely undeserved and gifted to me." The author would label himself a Christ follower, an Evangelical Christian with strong Reformed beliefs. He loves discussing and debating the two "taboo" subjects: Politics and Religion. He tries to read and listen to a minimum of fifty books a year and realizes that no matter what topic or genre, whether Bible, theology, Christianity, history, biography, philosophy, political, social commentary, pop-culture, or even fiction, they all tie together in the spider's web of worldview. His favorite authors are C.S. Lewis, Francis Schaeffer, James R. White, Gregory Koukl, R.C. Sproul, J. Gresham Machen, G.K. Chesterton, J. Budziszewski, and Peter Kreeft. He loves Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Voddie Baucham, Paul Washer, and Dwight L. Moody. He enjoys watching the YouTube channels of John Cooper at Cooper Stuff, Doug Wilson at Blog and Mablog, Alisa Childers, Allen Parr at The Beat, and Melissa Dougherty. His hobbies are generally reading and writing, music, hiking, and laughing. He has been writing songs/lyrics since the age of eight and has played in a few Christian Rock bands. He has written poetry, several biblical studies over the past decades, and has one finished book manuscript entitled, “Shaken Faith: When God Has Let You Down”. He has also written for the now defunct Examiner website as the Philadelphia Christian Perspectives Examiner. He wishes he could write some fiction.
