The Celebration of Christmas

The Word of our God will stand forever

Isaiah 40:8

Christmas is a beautiful season of glorious trees, bright lights, rich music, wonderful concerts, glorious celebration—yes, Christmas is a beautiful season. But not in July. In July Christmas would be strange, weird, crazy, a leftover that should have been put away and now needs to be thrown away. The decorations are out of place, faded, and finished in the summer heat. Who wants Christmas on the Fourth of July?

Christmas is like life: alive, energetic, colorful, beautiful until, as Isaiah the prophet said, “the breath of the Lord blows on it.” Then the flower fades and the color goes, and Christmas is over, only to come again next year. While Christmas fades it always returns because the word of our God stands forever.

Like Christmas in its season, so is life in its times. Christmas comes with its bright lights, great decorations, and wonderful gifts and then fades into darkness, plainness, and the same old same old. So it is ultimately with life. Life has its bright moments, its Christmases, its seasons of celebration, but sooner or later, like Christmas, life fades. Like the flowers of the field that fade when the breath of God blows on them, so we fade when God breathes on us. We are as temporary as the Christmas season, but we are as permanent as the word of our God. As His word stands, so our lives also stand forever if we put our faith in the living Word who came from the Father at the first Christmas.

This is the ultimate celebration of Christmas, the reason for all its beauty, color, and joy. Because Jesus was born, we have been born. Jesus was born to die for us and then live eternally through us, so we have been born again to enter into His life and live eternally through Him. He is the living Word of God, the Savior promised by God’s written word who came to live among us and teach us how to live to please the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit forever.

This is the celebration of Christmas, the reason why we rejoice, the reason for the brilliance and beauty of this season. All of the joy, all of the color, all of the excitement, all of the praise, all of the wonderful times together simply remind us that the Word of our God lives forever and because of our relationship with Him, we will stand forever as well.

When our life withers and our flower fades we can know for sure that we are like Christmas. Our season is ending, but our eternity is beginning, all because of Christmas and the birth of Jesus. He who came to rise from the dead plans the same restoration for us. He who rose from the dead through the power of God plans the same resurrection for us. When the grass withers and the flowers fade we can know that we are headed for new grass and new flowers, that will never wither and will never fade.

The birth of the Lord takes life to give us life. This is the celebration of Christmas.
