This Daughter of Mine

Sometimes life brings dark, lonely moments that seem endless. And just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does. Like a contraction during childbirth, you breathe through it, screaming every second of that moment for a glimpse of relief.

I’ve had many, many moments like that but nothing comes close to what I went through in 1997. In the midst of it all, a baby’s cry—God’s gift of mercy and grace in a living song.

This Daughter of Mine

Seventeen years ago today, God gave me a daughter.

This daughter of mine, I’m nothing like her, but in so many ways she’s just like me!

She’s quite sassy. A girl with her own mind and a heart for God, she’s ready, prepared and perhaps overzealous to take on the challenges that will soon come her way.

For the girl who never wanted daughters, I value my girl more than I could have ever imagined. I care about her opinion of me and I love that she tells me how important I am to her. Laughter comes easy for her. I look at her and even today, I can’t believe she’s here walking around with her head held high, tall, beautiful with a confidence of knowing she matters. Yes, she does—she matters. She matters to me.

She amazes me. I love watching her interact with her dad who faithfully walks alongside her. What a difference he makes in the way she responds to life. He melts at the sound of her calling him daddy. She giggles at the sound of him calling her beautiful. It’s a relationship I will never understand, but it’s one that I value for them.

She’s not perfect. I’m not either. So we fight—sometimes with harsh words, sometimes in silence. It’s okay because in so many ways, she’s just like me and then again, she’s nothing like me at all.

She’s tall. I’m short. She loves art. I love to write. She hates spelling. I love words. She tries to cook. I teach her to cook. I dislike shopping with a passion. She passionately loves it way too much.

We love Bilbo Baggins, Legolas and Gandolf the White. And we speak of Mr. Darcy and Wesley-my-dear-Wesley like they really exist. We gossip about celebrities like silly schoolgirls, we pick out fingernail polish like it’s a matter of life and death and we listen to 80’s music while we text, Instagram and Snapchat all at the same time.

Raquel Wroten (MAMC, Dallas Theological Seminary) was born in McAllen, Texas but has lived in the Dallas/Fort Worth area most of her life. Raised by a single mother, Raquel grew up knowing the meaning of diversity, creativity, and chaos through her four brothers and three sisters. The greatest gift she ever received came from her mother who taught her that living as a believer doesn’t mean perfection, it means grace. Raquel met her husband Rick at a church retreat in Oklahoma on a cold November weekend. They dated for a year and got married in June 1992. A couple of years later, Rick graduated with his ThM, and they welcomed Joshua. . .then Abby. . .and surprise, it’s Anna! Intermixing their cultures, the Wrotens have established a variety of traditions along with interesting combinations of food. Raquel believes that ministry begins at home so she finds new ways of serving those she calls her own. Raquel serves as editor of DTS Magazine and enjoys writing (in English, Spanish and Spanglish), cooking, coffee, education and serving up a feast for her friends and family.

    DAUGHTERS FOR MOM AND DAD

WE HAVE THREE (3) LOVELY DAUGHTERS . . . ALTHOUGH THEY DON'T LIVE WITH US ANYMORE, WE CALL THEM EVERYDAY AND THEY CALL US EVERY WEEKENDS.

THEY LET US KNOW, IF THEY HAVE MAJOR DECISIONS TO MAKE (ALTHOUGH THEY ARE KNOW TOGETHER WITH THEIR BETTER HAVES).  LOVE IS THE ONLY IMPORTANT THING THAT KEEPS US ALL TOGETHER . . . WE AS PARENTS, SHOULD MAKE OUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS FELT THAT WAY – SINCE DAY 1.

GOD BLESS ALL OUR FAMILIES AND YOURS.  AMEN.
