Humans being and Humans doing

Sunday School Chronicles

Me: I’m doing Galentine’s Day with my apartment mates this Friday! Who knows what Galentine’s Day is?

Student 1: Is that when you’re single and eat a bunch of pringles?

Me: Haha! No.

Student 2: Is it when you eat a bunch of ice cream because you’re single?

Me: No.

Student 3: Do you drink a gallon of water?

Me: Not even close! Galentine’s Day is when you celebrate your girl friendships. You can be single, married, dating or it’s complicated! Let’s switch gears to two really cool ladies in the bible. Mary and Martha!

Student 4: Who are they?

Me: I’m so glad you asked! Martha is a doer. Mary is a be-er. Doers get things done. They have intricate plans. Raise your hand if you think this applies to you. *half raise their hands*. Be-ers can be very much go with the flow. They can be calm and spontaneous. It’s ok if things don’t go according to plan, they’re cool. Raise your hand if you think you’re a be-er? *kids raise hands*

Student 5: I think I’m both.

Me: And that’s totally fine. God designed each of you. Martha’s in the kitchen doing what she does best: handling business. She’s busy cooking and where’s Mary? Not helping! She’s sitting at Jesus’ feet, listening to Him teach.

Students: Uh oh. That’s not fair! She’s not helping.

Me: But Jesus hits Martha with some wisdom. He told her Mary was doing the right thing. Jesus just fed the 5,000. Do you think He could’ve fed everyone in that house? He could’ve easily said, “Let there be food!”

Students: Oh yeah. That’s true.

Me: Doers. We have to be careful. We can’t let our plans get in the way of God’s agenda. Be-ers. You have to be careful of using being as an excuse to do absolutely nothing. Be-ers. If your mom tells you to do the dishes, you can’t say, “Sorry mom. I’m being right now.” Students: That’s true!

Reflect: God mad us to be human beings. But we’re also expected to do things. There are times when the only action God requires of us is just to sit down and be with him. But, there are also times when God wants us to take action. We can often do both at the same time. Sit and ask God what he wants you to do. He is there to let you know which pleases Him most.
