Let’s Eat!

Growing up in my family, some of the most wonderful and enjoyable times were spent around a dinner table. We’d eat and talk and laugh and just enjoy each other. Here in a couple of weeks, I’ll drive to my hometown and my entire family will gather together and eat, laugh and just enjoy each other again. Side Note: There is a chance that the same old stories that have been told for years, will be told again except even more embellished. I’m just saying!

I don’t know if that’s the same thing for you and your family but I think I’ve had some of the most profound and impactful conversations I’ve ever had around the setting of the dinner table.

I wondered if this was the case for Jesus and the results sort of speak for themselves. We see in scripture that Jesus loved to sit in fellowship with others and enjoy a good meal. What’s even more profound is that it was often in the setting of a meal or food that Jesus would show us his so much of his greatness.

Here’s a just few good examples:

Jesus at the wedding feast in Cana – He turned water into wine – best party trick ever!
Having dinner at Matthews house – Jesus mic dropped one on the pharisees – said he came to call sinners to repentance and not a bunch of religious snobs – The Pharisees are still mad about it!
Having dinner at Mary & Martha’s house – Martha, Martha Martha! – Here Jesus reset Martha’s worship priorities. (Confession: I’m totally a Martha in real life)
Feeding the 5000 – Need I say More? Jesus was the ultimate caterer!!
Dinner in Bethany – Having dinner with Lazarus WHO WAS DEAD A FEW DAYS EARLIER!!!!! – Jesus doesn’t just bring you back to life but he feeds you too. What a guy!!!
The Last Supper – So much here but at the end of the day – pretty much set’s up the Gospel while also showing us how to be the ultimate servant. Dinner and foot massage!

All this to say, that today I hope that this Christmas season you the reader can sit around a table and have great conversations about life past, present and future with your friends and family but most importantly have conversations about the Lord and the importance of him in your lives. This is what the early followers did and this is what we do today. Acts records this chapter 2 verse 42 “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”

By the way, I’m assuming if Jesus enjoyed food as much as he did here on earth, there’s got to be food in Heaven. A guy can pray for that right?

Merry Christmas,
