On the Trinity and Gender Hierarchy

    January 24, 2023 / 0 Comments

Referencing the work of William Witt in Icons of Christ against such thinking, one of my students noted that some complementarians continue to argue that male-over-female hierarchy is rooted in the Trinity. But Witt argues that the fundamental issue of God’s nature is more important than anthropology (the study of humans). So, this student asked for clarification from Ver-lee Cheneweth, my teaching assistant who has made the Trinity and gender a subject of deep research. Here is Ver-lee’s response:  First, in Classical Trinitarianism there is no hierarchy in the Godhead. Second, we must not pattern male/female relationships after the interrelations of the members of the Godhead. Why? Because the Creator is greater than creation.…

Eight Views of Women in the Church, Home, and Society within the Inerrancy Camp

    September 11, 2018 / 2 Comments

Lately, an old post I wrote about different views of women in the church and home has been receiving some airtime and critique. The post was designed to show the spectrum of views held by those who self-identify as holding to the verbal plenary inspiration of scripture. Biola’s Octavio Esqueda writing for Christianity Today rightly observed about my outline that, “Not all egalitarians would identify as feminists, and not all complementarians would call themselves extreme traditionalists or patriarchal. Therefore, although not perfect, this outline provides a useful description of possibilities within the broad main positions.” It’s true—the list is not exhaustive or perfect; yet it does give us some categories and a summary of rationales. Based on…

A False god to Bring You Comfort in “The Shack” (“The Shack” Review, part 2)

    March 17, 2017 / 1 Comment

“True worship must worship God as He exists, not as we wish Him to be. The essence of idolatry is the making of images of God. An image is a shadow, a false representation. We may not bow before a statue or a figure, but if we make an image of god in our mind that is not in accord with God’s revelation of himself, then we are not worshipping in truth….” writes James R. White. “If we love Him and worship Him as He deserves, we will not dare to ‘edit’ Him to fit our desires.”[1] “Watch out for false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing” (Matthew…

What Is Your Voice: Expert or Fellow-Traveler? 5 Tips to Communicate with More Influence

June 16, 2014 / Comments Off on What Is Your Voice: Expert or Fellow-Traveler? 5 Tips to Communicate with More Influence

Whether to friends and family or to an audience, whether consciously or unconsciously, we all assume a certain voice when we speak. Take this little test to find out if you are more of an expert or a fellow traveler… 1. Have you demonstrated mastery of a particular interest or passion? 2. Have you demonstrated over the long haul the ability to love well and have great relationships? Have you raised an outstanding family? 3. Have you demonstrated the power of the Holy Spirit in your life out of deep devotion to prayer and God’s Word, or in the crucible of suffering? 4. Have you demonstrated mastery of a profession…

    Is My Husband My Priest?

    January 22, 2013 / 6 Comments

One so-called feminist idea that we might think came out of the Enlightenment actually came right out of the Reformation: The doctrine of the priesthood of all believers. This teaching opened new ways for men and women to think of women not as intrinsically inferior to men, but as partners called to lead the world to Christ. In Peter’s first epistle we read, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood (italics added), a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (2:9). Peter was writing to the whole church,…
