Tightly Secure in Him

“Let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.” Hebrews 10:22–23 (NLT), (bold and italics mine)

Many of us know what insecurity looks like. When it appears and sets in our lives, especially in our abilities—at our jobs, our homes, our relationships and how we parent—we attach ourselves to someone or something we feel is stronger, more competent.

And we imitate everything they do or we do everything they tell us to do. We crave the, “You’re doing a great job!” and all the affirmations that come with doing the popular thing. And we conform—we lay aside the gifts and talents God has given us, hoping to achieve what the world defines as successful.

The more we hide behind our insecurities, the more our doubts grow. Soon we start believing we have control and we can operate in our own power. All the while, we forget God’s promises. We forget our position.

The thing about insecurity, it highlights weaknesses and it pulls us away from God’s truth and promises about how He made us. How can God ever use me with all of my weaknesses? I’m too messy. I’m a failure. He can’t use me!

For this reason, we must base our identity on Jesus. We need to understand He loves us unconditionally and He makes us valuable and has a plan and purpose for our lives.

Even with all our past stuff, we need to remember we “are hidden in Christ” (Col. 3:3). When God sees us, He sees Him. And nothing we’ve done—our pasts, messes and sins, “will ever separate us from the love of God” (Rom. 8:38–39).

So next time insecurity sets in, try to remember you are attached to Him. Realize through our insecurities, we can give God the power to do His thing through us. It’s His strength, His power and His abilities that help us do what He wants us to do.

Remember He is the One who created us as a masterpiece. “He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago,” so we can do what He has prepared in advance for us to do (Eph. 2:10).

Many of us know what insecurity feels like. When it appears, we need to remember Him and need to acknowledge Him in the talents and abilities He has given us. We need to feel confident in Him. If we are confident in Christ, we will feel confident of greater and better things. We will have the freedom to live radically for Jesus and we will experience the joy of what it means to live for Him.

Who do you run to when you feel insecure? How can you start trusting God with your insecurities?

Raised by a single mother, Raquel grew up knowing the meaning of diversity, creativity, and chaos through her four brothers and three sisters. The greatest gift she ever received came from her mother who taught her that living as a believer doesn’t mean perfection, it means grace. Raquel met her husband Rick at a church retreat in Oklahoma on a cold November weekend. They dated for a year and got married in June 1992. A couple of years later, Rick graduated with his ThM, and they welcomed Joshua. . .then Abby. . .and surprise, it’s Anna! Intermixing their cultures, the Wrotens have established a variety of traditions along with interesting combinations of food. Raquel believes that ministry begins at home so she finds new ways of serving those she calls her own. Raquel serves as editor of DTS Magazine and enjoys writing (in English, Spanish and Spanglish), cooking, coffee, education and serving up a feast for her friends and family.
