Why You Need Your Why!

Have you ever felt lost in life?  You know, a time when you felt like you were going through the motions of life but you were not really sure where you were going?  Sort of lost in a haze of uncertainty that made you question your very existence?  Perhaps, you've even grown numb to life and just live life day to day with hopes for something better.  Ever wonder how you got in this position?

Personally I think some of it has to do with that fact that many don’t know or lose the “why” for their lives.  In my opinion, the “why” is critical for us to live happy & productive lives otherwise you live a life without purpose. For some, the “why” may simply be to provide for their families and/or to have a great marriage and for others the “why” may be to accumulate wealth or have a position of power.  Regardless, in most cases your “why” is unique to you.

On the contrary, in ministry, the “why” is centered around serving God and His people so the “why” for you is essentially not your own – it’s God’s but that’s ok because His “why” is you and me.  There is nothing more beautiful than this mutual “why”!!!

For many, the “why” can change throughout one’s life and from season to season.  I think I have had half a dozen “why’s” in my life and I have a few “why’s” now, which leads me to my next point.  You can have multiple “why’s” at one time.  My “why’s” include:

  • Serving the Lord and His church.
  • Loving my wife like Christ loves the Church
  • Raising my children in the way they should go

I have a few other “why’s” but as far as the big “why’s” go, those are mine.

If you lost your “why” then you need to do some self evaluation and get your “why” back.  If you don’t have a “why” then you need to ask God for your “why”.  Some reading this may have their “why” but perhaps you just needed a little reminder about it.

My challenge to you is to think about your “why” today and then remember all the reasons your “why” still needs you and why you still need it.  Don’t let the world rob you of your “why” and don’t let your “why” fade.  Perhaps your “why” can change the world or have a profound positive effect on many people.  You never know!!

I better go one of my “why’s” needs me!
