    God and CSI, Take 2

    January 14, 2015 / 0 Comments

At our house, conversations about ID usually aren’t about “identification.” It means “Intelligent Design.” My husband Ray’s entire education is in science, including a Ph.D. in molecular biology. Early in his Christian walk, learning there was evidence against evolution lit a fire under him that has only grown in the 35 years since. Today, he is thrilled by advances in science that on an almost-monthly basis reveal more and more evidence that an intelligence is the only reasonable explanation for many aspects of the natural world. But that doesn’t sit well with people who don’t want to be accountable to the God they know perfectly well is there, but spend…

The Power of an Expert Speaking as a Fellow Traveler: Phillip Johnson

June 30, 2014 / Comments Off on The Power of an Expert Speaking as a Fellow Traveler: Phillip Johnson

When my husband Jack was in seminary he was taught to speak as the expert from a posture of strength. If you talk about weakness, struggle or failure, speak in hindsight from the place of victory won. It’s not always safe to talk about your weaknesses. You don’t want to give your detractors or enemies ammunition. (Especially in churches.)   In today's culture that mindset is changing. But, If you are an expert, why would you want to try to speak as a fellow-traveler? What might be the benefits of exposing your weaknesses, speaking of your struggles, or even failures? In the academy? In churches? Phillip Johnson, the father of…

A Christian Conservative Goes to College, part 2 (Philosophy 101)

    February 25, 2011 / 1 Comment

“If only you would keep completely silent! For you that would be wisdom” (Job 13:5). “Philosophy” is a word based upon two Greek root words, “philo” meaning “love” and “sophia” meaning “wisdom.” Thus Philosophy is supposed to mean, “love of wisdom.” “Wisdom is supreme,” the Scriptures tell us, “so acquire wisdom, and whatever you acquire, acquire understanding” (Proverbs 4:7). I took my first Philosophy class in my very first semester of college. I was very excited about taking it because I wanted to learn more about Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. I wanted to learn about the great thinkers. I was ready for God to teach me His Truth even through…

Ode to Bob the Tomato OR Making an Idol out of Impact

    September 25, 2009 / 2 Comments

This last week I was asked, "Who has been your favorite interview?" And I surprised myself with who immediately came to mind: "Phil Vischer," I replied, "the creator of VeggieTales." And here's why…it's the picture of the ruthless love of God that comes through Phil's story, Me, Myself and Bob." 0
