How to Suffer Effectively

Suffering has been effective when you are more Christlike (e.g., more obedient) at its conclusion.

When we, through our thoughts, words, and actions, say to God, “Not thy, but my will be done,” He is obligated to honor our request since God will not override our free will. Consequently, God rightfully passes judgment (1) for suffering from Satan’s fallen world (1 John 5:19. Acts 26:18) to come into our lives. 

We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. (1 John 5:19 NET)

‘But rise up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a servant and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; rescuing you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you, to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the authority of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’ (Acts 26:16–18 LSB)

God partially lifts the hedge of protection (1), allowing us to experience what we deserve based on our lack of Christ conformity and our many sins knowingly and unknowingly committed. The goal of this suffering is to shape our character into that of Christ, including removing pride.

Not only this, but we also rejoice in sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance, character, and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:3–5 NET)

And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose, because those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified. (Romans 8:28–30 NET)

My brothers and sisters, consider it nothing but joy when you fall into all sorts of trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything. (James 1:2–4 NET)

For even if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I would be telling the truth, but I refrain from this so that no one may regard me beyond what he sees in me or what he hears from me, even because of the extraordinary character of the revelations. Therefore, so that I would not become arrogant, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to trouble me—so that I would not become arrogant. (2 Corinthians 12:6–7 NET)

From scripture, we can see that Satan uses a consistent strategy when he attacks.

If you forgive anyone for anything, I also forgive him—for indeed what I have forgiven (if I have forgiven anything) I did so for you in the presence of Christ, so that we may not be exploited by Satan (for we are not ignorant of his schemes). (2 Corinthians 2:10,11 NET)

Satan will come to try and remove God’s Word from our lives.

Have you not made a hedge around him and his household and all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock have increased in the land. But extend your hand and strike everything he has, and he will no doubt curse you to your face!” So the Lord said to Satan, “All right then, everything he has is in your power. Only do not extend your hand against the man himself!” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. (Job 1:10–12 NET)

When you gather together in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I am with you in spirit, along with the power of our Lord Jesus, turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. (1 Corinthians 5:5 NET)

This is because the Word of God is the source of our strength.

The Son is the radiance of his glory and the representation of his essence, and he sustains all things by his powerful word, and so when he had accomplished cleansing for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. (Hebrews 1:3 NET)

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For the righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel from faith to faith, just as it is written, “The righteous by faith will live.” (Romans 1:16–17 NET)

The Parable of the Sower, Seeds, and Soils

This strategy was described by Jesus in a parable that He indicated was the key to understanding all the other parables.

He said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? Then how will you understand any parable? (Mark 4:13 NET)

The rain and snow fall from the sky and do not return, but instead water the earth and make it produce and yield crops, and provide seed for the planter and food for those who must eat. In the same way, the promise that I make does not return to me, having accomplished nothing. No, it is realized as I desire and is fulfilled as I intend.” (Isaiah 55:10–11 NET)

The Seed is the Word of God

“Now the parable means this: The seed is the word of God. (Luke 8:11 NET)

Furthermore, Jesus described in this parable how Satan will do everything in his ability to stop the seed from growing in our spiritual hearts (1).

Satan was the Archangel Lucifer in Heaven (1); therefore, he understands that everything in the Kingdom of God works on planting, tending, and harvesting seeds (1).

The Sower is Jesus, the Son of Man

He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. (Matthew 13:37 NET)

But Jesus was silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” (Matthew 26:63–64 NET)

The Four Soils

1 . The soil of human hardheartedness and satanic theft

He told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. (Matthew 13:3,4 NET)(cf. Mark 4:3,4. Luke 8:5)

“So listen to the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches what was sown in his heart; this is the seed sown along the path. (Matthew 13:18,19 NET)(cf. Mark 4:14,15. Luke 8:11,12)

Satan first tries to prevent the Word from growing in your heart through:

• Man’s tradition

Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like this.” (Mark 7:13 NET)

• Legalism (i.e., a performance-based relationship with God)

You who are trying to be declared righteous by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace! (Galatians 5:4 NET)

God’s discipline focuses on mending broken relations, not broken rules

• Worldly reasoning

For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—and not with clever speech, so that the cross of Christ would not become useless. (1 Corinthians 1:17 NET)

2. The Soil of Rocky Ground

Other seeds fell on rocky ground where they did not have much soil. They sprang up quickly because the soil was not deep. But when the sun came up, they were scorched, and because they did not have sufficient root, they withered. (Matthew 13:5,6 NET)(Mark 4:5,6. Luke 8:6)

The seed sown on rocky ground is the person who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. But he has no root in himself and does not endure; when trouble or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he falls away. (Matthew 13:20,21 NET)(Mark 4:16,17. Luke 8:13)

However, if the Word does start to grow, he causes that Word to be dried up by sending you persecution.

We get so busy watching the sea that we forget the “C”-o-m-e!

Peter said to him, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.” So he said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:28–31 NET)

This is the test of failure: when everything seems to be going wrong, the aim is to cause us to focus on the problems and not the promises of the Bible that can set us free.

Through these things he has bestowed on us his precious and most magnificent promises, so that by means of what was promised you may become partakers of the divine nature, after escaping the worldly corruption that is produced by evil desire. (2 Peter 1:4 NET)

3. The Soil Infested with Thorns

Other seeds fell among the thorns, and they grew up and choked them. (Matthew 13:7 NET)(cf. Mark 4:7. Luke 8:7)

The seed sown among thorns is the person who hears the word, but worldly cares and the seductiveness of wealth choke the word, so it produces nothing. (Matthew 13:22 NET)(cf. Mark 4:18,19. Luke 8:14)

If the Word cannot be dried up, he tries to prevent the Word from growing enough to bear fruit by distracting us with the cares, pleasure, or contentment.

We become lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, because all that is in the world (the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance produced by material possessions) is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains forever. (1 John 2:15–17 NET)

But understand this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, opposed to what is good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than loving God. They will maintain the outward appearance of religion but will have repudiated its power. So avoid people like these. (2 Timothy 3:1–5 NET)

This is the test of success: when we get so busy with all that is going right, we no longer find time for an intimate relationship with God.

Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For if the message spoken through angels proved to be so firm that every violation or disobedience received its just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was first communicated through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard him, while God confirmed their witness with signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. (Hebrews 2:1–4 NET)

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1–2 NET)

Remember, Satan brought the suffering to break us, but God judged it right to come upon us to make us (1).

4. The Good Soil

But other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty. The one who has ears had better listen!” (Matthew 13:8,9 NET)(Mark 4:8,9. Luke 8:8)

But as for the seed sown on good soil, this is the person who hears the word and understands. He bears fruit, yielding a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown.” (Matthew 13:23 NET)(Mark 4:20. Luke 8:15)

If we love God, then we will obediently turn to Him in the trial (John 14:15), and then God will cause it to work for our good. 

And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose, because those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified. (Romans 8:28–30 NET)

Working for our good does not mean obtaining what we want or think we need but rather fulfilling God’s purpose of our being conformed to the image of His unique Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

For our momentary, light suffering is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison because we are not looking at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen. For what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:17–18 NET)

God Wastes Nothing

“Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and how many baskets you took up?” ‭‭(Matthew 16:9,10 ‭NET‬)

That is, God is more than enough in every situation and wastes nothing. Everything has a purpose, and nothing happens by accident. The happy times and the sad times. The triumphs and the tragedies. Everything has a purpose. While we may weep through the hard times and be broken-hearted over the pain others experience through those times, we can be comforted by knowing that none of it is for nothing. Everything has a purpose; God wastes nothing.

Not only this, but we also rejoice in sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance, character, and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:3–5 NET)

“Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely on account of me. Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way. (Matthew 5:11–12 NET)

By your endurance you will gain your lives. (Luke 21:19 NET)

Steps to Effective Suffering

Those who have learned the following Biblical steps will cause the suffering to be effective. Suffering has been effective when you are more Christlike (e.g., more obedient) at its conclusion.

1 – Call upon the Lord and acknowledge He is in control of all things (1), including the situation bringing the suffering.

When they heard this, they raised their voices to God with one mind and said, “Master of all, you who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them, (Acts 4:24 NET)

if my people, who belong to me, humble themselves, pray, seek to please me, and repudiate their sinful practices, then I will respond from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14 NET)

Then I saw heaven opened and here came a white horse! The one riding it was called “Faithful” and “True,” and with justice he judges and goes to war. His eyes are like a fiery flame and there are many diadem crowns on his head. He has a name written that no one knows except himself. He is dressed in clothing dipped in blood, and he is called the Word of God. The armies that are in heaven, dressed in white, clean, fine linen, were following him on white horses. From his mouth extends a sharp sword, so that with it he can strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod, and he stomps the winepress of the furious wrath of God, the All-Powerful. He has a name written on his clothing and on his thigh: “King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Revelation 19:11–16 NET)

Look, the pay you have held back from the workers who mowed your fields cries out against you, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. (James 5:4 NET)

That is, we give the battle to the Lord of the Sabaoth – the Lord of the Armies of Heaven!

Yahweh-Sabaoth (Tseva’oth) – The Creator, Divine Warrior and Divine King, Lord of the Holy Angelic Army, the commander of the cosmic forces, and the divine council’s head. (1 Samuel 1:3,11)
(New Covenant Equivalent(s): Romans 9:29. Revelation 11:16,17)

2 – Bring to your remembrance what God, who is love (1), has done in the past and the promises of our covenant with God (i.e., the Bible) (Acts 4:25-28).

The person who does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:8 NET)

Samuel took a stone and placed it between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Up to here the Lord has helped us.” (1 Samuel 7:12 NET)

You, however, have followed my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my endurance, as well as the persecutions and sufferings that happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra. I endured these persecutions and the Lord delivered me from them all. (2 Timothy 3:10–11 NET)

When they heard this, they raised their voices to God with one mind and said, “Master of all, you who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them, who said by the Holy Spirit through your servant David our forefather, ‘Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot foolish things? The kings of the earth stood together, and the rulers assembled together, against the Lord and against his Christ.’ “For indeed both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together in this city against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, to do as much as your power and your plan had decided beforehand would happen. (Acts 4:24–28 NET)

As we do this, it not only gives glory to God but also causes our faith to grow as we remember all that He has done in the past. We will then be more able to trust Him for the future. (2)

3 – State the situation that is causing the suffering and why, according to our covenant (1) (i.e., The Bible), it is not just (i.e., because Jesus has already paid the price for our salvation, deliverance, healing, etc.) 1 Corinthians 1:30).

All of them conspired together to move with armed forces against Jerusalem and to create a disturbance in it. So we prayed to our God and stationed a guard to protect against them both day and night. (Nehemiah 4:8–9 NET)

And now, Lord, pay attention to their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your message with great courage, (Acts 4:29 NET)

He is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, (1 Corinthians 1:30 NET)

4 – Ask God (1) to intervene and place our lives completely in His hands.

Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom my faith is set and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me until that day. (2 Timothy 1:12 NET)

We now must wait upon the Lord (1) with patience. Failure to get quiet before God can delay progression to the next step.

So Eli said to Samuel, “Go back and lie down. When he calls you, say, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” So Samuel went back and lay down in his place. Then the Lord came and stood nearby, calling as he had previously done, “Samuel! Samuel!” Samuel replied, “Speak, for your servant is listening!” (1 Samuel 3:9–10 NET)

Look, the Lord takes notice of his loyal followers, those who wait for him to demonstrate his faithfulness by saving their lives from death and sustaining them during times of famine. We wait for the Lord; he is our deliverer and shield. For our hearts rejoice in him, for we trust in his holy name. May we experience your faithfulness, O Lord, for we wait for you. (Psalm 33:18–22 NET)

He says, “Stop your striving and recognize that I am God! I will be exalted over the nations! I will be exalted over the earth!” (Psalm 46:10 NET)

And now, Lord, pay attention to their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your message with great courage, while you extend your hand to heal, and to bring about miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” (Acts 4:29–30 NET)

5 – God will reveal His plan of deliverance (i.e., His vision for our circumstances).

 When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God courageously. (Acts 4:31 NET)

Praise God that what He has promised is as good as done (i.e., exercise faith (1)) (Mark 11:24. Romans 4:17).

For this reason I tell you, whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. (Mark 11:24 NET)

Act on what God has revealed to us (i.e., be obedient!)

If only my people would obey me! If only Israel would keep my commands! (Psalm 81:13 NET)

If you have a willing attitude and obey, then you will again eat the good crops of the land. (Isaiah 1:19 NET)

Why pay money for something that will not nourish you? Why spend your hard-earned money on something that will not satisfy? Listen carefully to me and eat what is nourishing! Enjoy fine food! (Isaiah 55:2 NET)

When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God courageously. The group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but everything was held in common. With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on them all. (Acts 4:31–33 NET)

6 – Now that we have submitted to God, it is time to resist the devil! (3)

Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour. Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering. (1 Peter 5:8–9 NET)

So submit to God. But resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James 4:7 NET)

7 – Give all the glory to God (1) for the victory!

Now to the eternal king, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever! Amen. (1 Timothy 1:17 NET)

If we turn to God (1), thanking Him for the suffering (1 Thessalonians 5:18. Ephesians 5:20) and offer up the sacrifice of praise, giving thanks to Jesus’ Name (Hebrews 13:15), our flesh is crucified. We become conformed to His death and learn obedience (1) through suffering (Hebrews 5:8;2:10,18;4:15). Consequently, our suffering has been effective! (2 Corinthians 4:17,18. Psalms 30:5)

Then he said to them all, “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but loses or forfeits himself? (Luke 9:23–25 NET)

Sometimes, it takes a deep hurt to feel a deep need for God

We will not suffer more than we are able to, and God has provided us a way out so that we might endure it. He is Yahweh-Yireh (1) (aka, Jehovah Jireh), which means “the Lord our Provider”!

Conclusion:

God keeps a written record of our suffering, including the number of our tears. He ensures none of it is wasted. All of it can be used to transform us into Christlikeness if we allow Him to teach us how to suffer effectively. Amen.

So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin, (1 Peter 4:1 NET)

Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker. But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name. Take your share of suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one in military service gets entangled in matters of everyday life; otherwise he will not please the one who recruited him. Also, if anyone competes as an athlete, he will not be crowned as the winner unless he competes according to the rules.The farmer who works hard ought to have the first share of the crops. Think about what I am saying and the Lord will give you understanding of all this. (2 Timothy 2:3–7)
