She Gets It!
Kids say the funniest things. They will make an offhand comment, use a saying in the correct manner or just make a funny proclamation. However, my oldest daughter made a striking comment that I want to pass on to you!

Friends and Foes
Blog – 10/13/11 Of Friends and Foes In second grade having friends is a big deal. Who you eat with at lunch and who you play with on the playground have a large effect on how your day is going to go. The person sitting next to you in Math class that you don’t like, and the person sitting next to you that you do like in English, can really affect your outlook on life.

Knowing the Ending
Generally, I don’t want to know how the plot ends. I like to watch the movie, read the book, or see the game and discover the outcome for myself. However, that changes when the conclusion really matters. It’s one thing to enjoy a story as it goes along and quite another to live through the unknown when the outcome seriously makes a difference. Being a fan of the Texas Rangers, I have been watching the baseball playoffs. On Monday I realized that I didn’t like the television commentators, so I muted the sound and turned on the radio. It was quickly apparent that the radio was ahead of the video…

Role of Eye-Witnesses in Jesus Tradition
Just a quick note to highlight the discussion by Richard Bauckham in his Jesus and the Eyewitnesses about the roots of the traditions about Jesus that circulated in the church. This key discussion is on pp. 290-300.

Women of Influence
It is quiet, dark, and the anticipation of the audience is like that of a live wire ready to spark. When her willowy frame finally glides through the curtains she beams a confident smile and energy pulsates through the stadium. 55,000 pairs of eyes fixate on her, fans scream in adoration, and glitter rains down from overhead. A star in every sense of the word, she works her Southern charm and exhibits adept mastery of both the audience and the stage. And while I realize that very few of us will ever reach her level of international recognition, I can’t help but wonder, what are the platforms that you and…

How to Raise Your Child’s Creativity Quotient
*Note: Parts of the following article are reprinted with changes from an article I published in July. I am hoping it will serve as a catalyst to get us praying, pondering, and planning about ways to help our students to be creative, think-outside-the-box learners. I welcome your wisdom and insights on the subject!

When to Break a Promise
An important part of integrity is keeping one’s word. But are there times when breaking a promise is the right thing to do? I think so. And I think God is honored when we do. We need to make a distinction between giving our word on a legitimate matter—such as wedding vows, signing a legal contract, or even promising to bake six dozen cookies for the PTA bake sale—and making promises that are foolish or sinful in the first place. I know a number of women struggling to disengage from emotionally dependent relationships with other women. Emotional dependency is putting all your emotional and relational eggs in another’s basket, so to…

Room for God
In his youth, David wandered the terrain as a lone shepherd. For centuries monks performed repetitive manual labor in their monasteries. The Amish farm in a world void of digital noise. We, on the otherhand, run from place to place, play Angry Birds in the grocery line and check email at stoplights. We have the radio, tv, phone endlessly filling our brains. We spin frenetically with meetings, clubs, commitments, events. We are filled up–overfilled–with activity. Where is the room for God?

The Tabernacle of Moses – God’s Heavenly Pattern for our Spiritual Transformation – Part III: The Holy Place – Table of Showbread
THE TABLE OF SHOWBREAD The Table of Showbread is located to our right along the Northside of the Tabernacle, directly across from and illuminated by the Golden Lampstand. Remember, there was no other source of light in the Holy Place other than the Golden Lampstand. The light from it is reflected off of the walls that are made of boards of acacia wood (very disease and pest resistant) overlaid with pure gold (Exodus 26:15-29) and the ceiling that is made of colored fine linen with pictures of the Cherubim (i.e., angels that guard God’s throne in Heaven) sewn on them (Exodus 26:1-6). Just as the Priests could not see the…

Harold Camping’s Scatological Eschatology
On Saturday, May 21st, 2011, Jesus did not return. “Harold Camping "flabbergasted" by non-Rapture” was the headline of one CBS/AP news story the following Monday.[1] But being flabbergasted did not stop the 89 year old Harold Camping who, only two days after his failed prediction, said, "[The] Bible clearly teaches that [on October 21st, 2011] the world is going to be destroyed altogether." As Ronald Reagan once said, "There you go again…" “Some have strayed… turned away to empty discussion. They want to be teachers…, but they do not understand what they are saying or the things they insist on so confidently” (1 Timothy 1:6-7).
