“As Yourself”
Once again, we find ourselves in an election year with vitriol flying from all directions like a messy food fight. I don’t know about you, but it’s my intention to rise above the sarcasm, hatred, and venomous words. Therefore, to help you and me, this writing focuses on God’s two greatest commandments. Today, most believers would confess our limited understanding, seriousness, and obedience to God’s two greatest commandments. Amid another test question by one of the Pharisees, this one, an expert in the law, Jesus is asked, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” (Matt 22:36). Jesus answers him and then adds more, “Love the Lord your God with all…

Real Life with the Golden Rule
LIVING THE GOLDEN RULE Author: Lucille Williams WITH OUR KIDS“Treat people the same way you want them to treat you.” Luke 6:31 (NASB)There was a season in my life where all three of my kids were attending differentschools. The daily drop off and pickup could become stressful and overwhelming. Youcan imagine what mornings looked like. There was one particular morning while dropping my youngest child, Joey, off at hiselementary school I made a really poor choice. I was trying to save time so that Tim, mymiddle child, wouldn’t be late to high school. I drove through the bus loop. I can hearyour gasp. I knew it was wrong but did it…

Ask, Seek, and Knock
“Name it, claim it!”, “Just believe!”, “Ask for whatever you want!”, “I want these circumstances to change!”, “You don’t have because you didn’t ask or have enough faith!”. These phrases circulate through our culture. Some of these phrases can seem to be supported by Scripture. But if we look closer, we can see the fallacy these phrases propose. You may or may not have fallen into the trap of asking God for whatever you wanted to make your life easier. Or maybe you have asked for things but the answer was “no” which left you angry with God, disappointed in God, or confused about God. Maybe you have doubted…

Becoming Entangled in Sin
Have you ever wondered how is it that we who have the Spirit of the Living God inside of us can become so easily entangled in sin? I believe that it is easy because it is as simple as opening our mouths to speak.

Above All Else––A Message for Weary Souls
As this over-the-top-difficult year wears on and hopes for a summer reprieve or a maskless fall fade, my mind can struggle to muster up positivity. I’ve heard I’m not alone. Apparently many of us wrestle with the lack of normalcy, inability to plan a way forward, and uncertainty of how long “this” will last.

Having a Wise Heart
I live in an educated society. In the Bible Studies I’ve led, nearly every woman has completed high school. More than half of them have a college degree. Maybe 10% have more than 1 degree including a masters and PhD. Yet this society in which I live is filled with educated people who continue to make stupid choices that cause all kinds of heartaches. Why is that? As a student, I was an academic achiever. I had lots of head knowledge from books, but my mom said to me in high school that I just didn’t have any common sense. She added that I would let my emotions rule my…

Teaching Children to Live Love
Obedience is one of the universal things that both parents and teachers seek to produce in children. As Christians obedience done with a wrong motive may look like obedience to us but it falls short. When it comes to obeying God, the heart attitude is as important as the action. A simple observation of their actions will not be enough to prove Biblical obedience. Sometimes a child gets it right by accident. They didn’t intentionally decide to obey but circumstances were such that without thinking about it they chose the right action. There are children who obey for fear of the punishment and with resentment in their heart. Other children…

ASKING QUESTIONS THAT CHANGE LIVES
From the time we are old enough to form a question, we devote all our time and energy to finding the right answers. The devastation a child feels, from having the wrong answer when asked a question in front of their class, clarifies the importance of a right answer. Children ae pushed forward in a pursuit of knowledge as though finding the right answers guarantees success. Answers are necessary. Right answers are preferable. But the right answer is only as valuable as the question is good. How many times did Jesus answer a question with a new question? Answers are important. But nver underestimate the power of learning to ask…

New Year Resolutions Run Wild
New Year resolutions are running wild this month. Many of them will die before the month is out. Only the resolutions that are corralled, nourished, and trained into a disciplined practice will survive. Many of God’s people will purpose in our hearts to memorize more Scripture. As parents and teachers we will want to ramp up our memory lessons because God’s Word encourages us to do so. It is a weapon for guarding our hearts from sin that seems to elude the vast majority. Psalm 119:9-11 (NET Bible) “How can a young person maintain a pure life?By guarding it according to your instructions! With all my heart I seek you. Do…
